On Stage

From the Artistic Director, Brett
A. Bernardini
WELCOME!
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you to The Spirit
of Broadway Theater. We have worked hard to create a unique, cutting-edge
performing arts organization that defies description by words and
finds definition only through experience.
This year, I have assembled a season of programming that dares to
ask, “Who are we; not just as individuals but as a community,
as a state, as a country?” The hallmark of our founding as
a country has been our ability to debate, to examine, to study and
to question. Yet, as our politics grow ever so more conservative
we are losing the very rights upon which our government was founded,
including freedom of speech.
After spending last season celebrating “the hero within,” it
made sense to me to create a season where our productions provide
our audiences with an opportunity to question the courage of our
convictions. From Rebels to Assassins, our 2004 season is about the
things we believe in and the things that scare us. It is a season
of introspection, discovery and debate. It is a season of what we
believe in and how our convictions define us, individually, regionally
and as Americans.
I don’t expect you to like everything, I would hope that you
would try it. If you don’t like what you see, turn in your
tickets to the Box Office at intermission and we'll give you
tickets for the next show for free. No questions. No hassles. Just
another part of my conviction that theater requires trust. If you
don’t trust me to deliver quality, innovative productions,
I am out of a job.
The Spirit of Broadway Theater is probably not what you expect a
theater to be. That’s a good thing. The fact is, we are everything
that you don’t expect and then a whole lot more.
Thank you for joining us!
